Is modernism relevant ?

The whole concept of modernism intrigues me. The idea that there was a period in time where people questioned everything around them and the traditional ways of society was being broken is just a very interesting concept. While today there are those who rebel and go against societal norms, there’s something different about an entire pack of individuals compared to just one individual. I think it’s also quite interesting how even the style of writing had shifted. The reader now learned to not blindly trust the narrator, much like how in the novel The Great Gatsby Nick does not appear to be the most trustworthy character. He can go from glorifying Gatsby and putting him on a pedestal, to throwing him under the bus and judging his every move in only a matter of seconds. He describes Gatsby to have a “curious” nature and praises the idea of this mysterious character.

The whole idea of having to question everything being relayed to you is such a scary but also refreshing feeling. When reading a novel written in this time period. It’s almost annoying to have to really process everything and take a step back and take a look at the situation from the outside. Despite this, I believe it’s necessary to question things instead of blindly trusting those who we believe to be bigger or higher that us. Once we see things from a different perspective, from a more inquiring stance, we are forced to almost shift our beliefs, for a time being. I believe we all need that shift, that different perception of reality that only modernism can provide.
