It’s not even that funny
Music all sounds the same. All the beats, the lyrics, the messages, all the same. When teenagers blare music in their car, it’s obviously either a form of gangster rap or annoying pop. The rapper must be rapping about drugs and partying and the singer must be spreading a message about loving yourself and heartache. Since all music sounds the same, all the artists must look the same. All rappers are African American and all pop singers are skinny white women with blonde hair. When they scream and shout their messages their audience also must be the same. Other African Americans only relate to the rapper and of course all the white girls really relate to the pop singers. It’s impossible for the two to switch sides, crossover, or change. We must stay in our boxes and not branch out and get cultured through different types of music. Any other form of music, we aren’t allowed to listen to it. The boxes must have their lids screw on shut and sealed tight. For if they escape, we risk actually becoming diverse and cultured. God forbid that happens.
I would hope that by now youhave caught onto the fact that I’m being sarcastic. Now I realize that by breaking this barrier and revealing to you what my intentions are is kind of strange and probably doesn’t make a whole lot of sense. However, that’s exactly what I want. I want you to question why people claim the things they claim after they make a joke or tell a story. Think about what their reasoning might be for their sarcastic tone or their dramatization. Why would an author describe Vegas as “bizarre and beautiful in it’s venality” ( Didion) and then go on to talk about how absurd and corrupt the weddings in Vegas are ? Now sure, they didn’t just flat out say their reasoning, but picture their reasoning and then question it. Don’t just trust every word and excuse you hear coming from someone’s mouth. Really think, really listen.

I loved your usage of irony in this post, Kat! While reading the beginning of the first paragraph, I was ready to fight when I realized that you couldn't possibly be serious. In other words, it was very effective as it got me to really think, as you put it.
ReplyDeleteI liked how you used sarcasm to mock lack of diversity, especially in music. I also enjoy how you tied this to information overall and how gullible the reader is, and how this relates to what we read in class. Well written!
ReplyDeleteI loved the use of sarcasm and irony in your writing. It really brought out your point on how different types of people should be able to listen to what they please. Great post!
