You aren't the only one that's frustrated

Getting stuck in a routine is always a good thing. Rolling out of bed at the crack of dawn, trying to put together an outfit that makes me look somewhat presentable, putting on makeup in order to mask all the sleep I lost and the paleness of my skin, trying to brush my messy hair, only to result in a poofy mess, and having to drive all the way to school while others around me never use their blinkers or know how to apply the brakes. Sounds wonderful doesn’t it ? Oh yeah, it’s the dream.
Now, testing had become a routine. I’m sure by now you’re sick of hearing about everyone talk about how school is “the most mind numbing place on earth” and the “unrealistic expectations”. Now those are all very much true, there’s no denying that. The only thing is, it’s very much just one big routine. Especially testing, specifically, standardized testing. Each student nervously bounces their leg or chews on their pencil. Most were told to get a good night's sleep, but how are they supposed to do that when they’re also told to study hard ? But by now we’ve all mastered the art of cramming and power napping, we can manage. Now let’s get to actually taking the test.
One of the first strategies that is learned is “skim the question to find out what you should concentrate on”. Well the only thing I’m concentrating on is the fact that the person next to me is already on the second page while I’m still trying to figure out the answer to number three. So I take a deep breath and just continue. I just repeatedly remind myself that it’s just a test, not a race (even though we all know it’s basically a race). They tell me to “read each passage actively and visually”. I scramble to find words to underline and phrases to circle, but all I’m thinking is “these are just words on a paper, how does a comma represent the living breathing and the dying starving?”, or something to that effect. There are many more steps and techniques but by now I’m beyond frustrated and done. I’m so over the moon finished with this that I’d rather pull my hair out than continue to bubble in letters on a scantron.

Alright, now that I’m all done with my therapy session, I’m going to go back to studying for the five tests/quizzes that I have this week. I realize that I have a big psychology test on Wednesday and that I won’t have all that much time to study, seeing as I’m going to practice running in circles with hundreds of other students that don’t have time to study and will be complaining about it while we stretch, but it is what it is. Maybe I’ll come back on here and rant some more, because that will surely make all of this testing just so much easier.

  1. This is so relatable. I also find it ironic how students are urged to sleep early but also study for longer periods of time. Your use of present tense also creates a connection with readers. Great post, Kat!!

  2. I really like your sarcastic tone, which derives entertainment from the excruciatingly boring and miserable routines that many of us have to get through high school. I especially like the first paragraph, because it seems like you are going to talk about how routines are helpful, only for you to do the exact opposite. Also, your description of track was hilarious. This is brilliant, Kat!
